I only made it half way through the episode before I broke down.

Helen, I miss you so much.

The 5th annual Gothtober.com halloween countdown calendar is getting ready to roll. This site features a new artwork each day for every day in October.

I've had a piece in the last four gothtobers, and am looking forward to this year for another macabre film.

Artist applications are due by July 31, so please get in your ideas now!

If you haven't heard yet, Boston wigged out when some LED artwork for an underground advertising campaign was placed around the city. That they wigged out three weeks after the artwork was placed is comical.

Well, FipiLele sent this to me:

another terrorist device?
THESE WERE ALL OVER TOWN ON MY WAY TO WORK THIS MORNING. AT IMPORTANT ROADWAYS AND PLACES PACKED WITH PEDESTRIANS!!!

Well, she is buried     permalink

Helen is gone, and even her body is beyond my reach. The pastor at the funeral said yesterday "the price of love is grief." I feel that. I guess he has done a bunch of funerals before. The church was standing room only, and it wasn't a small one. It was surreal to follow the coffin out and see the cadre of press photographers across the street trying to get "that perfect shot"

Normally I would say "fuck them." I'm not a big fan of press photographers in general. I have mixed emotions about them being there. Helen's death was international news, and it has set in motion a lot of events. That is newsworthy. Is showing the tears on the faces of her friends as they carry her lifeless body to the cemetery "newsworthy?" I want Helen to be remembered for what she was - a complex woman who was not only cheerful and joyous, but thoughtful, intellectual, and a fine artist, not just a martyr.

At the graveside ceremony, I hugged Mahalchick - a big, burly artist from NYC who had just flown in from Germany where he is doing a couple of shows. Paul had asked him to be one of the pallbearers. We clutched each other and sobbed. He's one of my few good friends who I can bury my head into his shoulder, since he is tall enough. We know him by his last name - Mahalchick - even though his first name is Michael. Helen was the first one to start just calling him by his last name. She thought that there were too many Michaels at CalArts, and really loved his last name. It stuck. He is just Mahakchick to all of us now. I finally met Mahalchick's boyfriend, a really sweet fellow I've heard a lot about, but I haven't been to NYC lately.

Poor Mahalchick. He has to go back to Germany. He doesn't speak German, he doesn't have any friends there. He is stuck there alone working until he finishes these shows, I think it is another month and a half. I will have friends in los angeles. Saturday we are getting together for Michael Gump's birthday. Michael was another of the pallbearers. Helen got her first tattoo with Michael. Michael got the chicken angel tattoo that Helen designed for him. She had been worried about how her tattoo would hurt, and asked him to come along as he had a bunch of them.

JP was a pallbearer too. I wish I were staying in SC today instead of flying home, if only to be there for her. Fortunately she will have the Gumps and Trixy with her. JP isn't too physical a person. I need hugs, I give hugs. JP rarely hugs. I wish I could hug her more. She is in more pain than I am, I know.

perhaps I will try to clean the kitchen. There is still the stain of the mashed potatoes that I spilled on the stove when I heard JP start screaming a week ago today when she got the phone call that Helen was dead. I'm almost aftaid to make potatoes again.

It was heartbreaking to see Paul hand daisies to Francis Pop to throw into the grave for Helen. I'm not sure if Franny knew what was going on. He only turned two a couple months ago. After the ceremony a bunch of us sat down near the grave to bind the memorial 'zines. We had punched holes in them but hadn't put the ribbon through the holes to finish the binding. A few of us took the confetti that had come from the hole punching and scattered it on the coffin.

Tonight I got home and watched CNN. They interviewed Helen's stepdad and he was crying. They showed Mahalchick, JP, Paul, and Francis Pop by Helen's casket. my eyes are burning from crying.

My good friend Helen Hill was murdered today. She was a fantastic artist, filmmaker and friend.

I still can't believe this senseless act. Her husband Paul was shot three times but survived.

other people have written about her: nolanik and b.rox

We are setting up a website in her memory for sharing stories, photos, movies, memories. that site is helenhill dot org

if you have anything you would like to share, send it to memory [at] helenhill [dot] org
