I'm building two NAS machines for home to replace the xserve RAID that is fast, but sucks down as much juice as a hairdryer running 24/7. Not very green, and not so easy on the wallet when I don't need the speed.

I've configured one with freenas, as I can set it up to be a time machine backup device (super awesome) but it doesn't run the latest version of zfs.

So, I tried nexentastor, which is free if you are storing under 12tb of data. It is built on opensolaris, has a slick web gui, and is made for enterprise solutions. Unfortunately, its rsync is completely busted. In attempting to back up a volume of 450gigs (my household's music) it backed up 780gigs of data without saying that it finished the job. Hogging all the bandwidth from my freenas server for two days without actually properly copying the files is a no-go. I expect it to copy the files. once. the way rsync is supposed to. Then copy any changes, not replicate the data again. The nexentastor manual is so completely out of date it is talking about features in a much older version of the software that it was impossible to figure out how to rectify this problem. somehow copying 450gigs to take up 780+ gigs with zfs dedup on means there is a big bug somewhere.

Now I've gone back to opensolaris, and this time I read the installation manual and had a nice, clean, working install.

No, I'm not going to link to Slate, those fuckers can suck it for not publishing relevant info about Mr. Keillor.

Dan, you rock.

tonight I got a call with a spoofed caller ID inviting me to participate in Tom Campbell's telephone town hall meeting where they would talk about health care reform.

I've participated in telephone town hall meetings before, notably with Xavier Becerra, my representative.

Unlike previous meetings, this "town hall" didn't offer any options to leave a question with an operator or to pose a question to Mr. Campbell. Therefore, this wasn't a participatory event and was merely an infomercial for his campaign for governor of California.

Sorry Tom, but first you spoof caller ID. Then you claim you are having a town hall meeting but don't give anyone the chance to participate.

Two Strikes, Tom Campbell.

Go have a party with your libertarian friends.

Today I got a call from a telemarketer. Unfortunately for the telemarketer, they gave me their information.

They are the Synergy Hospitality Group, LLC, with a website of : stayorlandoresorts.com

Here is their schpiel: the recorded announcement tells you that you have won a free Bahamas vacation, with your confirmation number of 555. If you stay on the line or press 1 for more information, you are connected to an operator who tells you that 555 is one of their platinum prize winners (gee, really? I bet you say that to all the girls.) and they then go into a hard sell trying to get you to book a vacation in Orlando before your cruise. Every time I tried asking about the cruise, I was deflected, and asked questions about whether I was married, what my household income was, etc.

Once I got their website and found that they had their contact info online, I told them they were in direct violation of the FTC Do Not Call policy, informed them to never call me again, and hung up.

Did I mention I hate telemarketers?

If you get called by these folks, be sure to file a complaint with the national Do Not Call Registry at donotcall.gov
